LoBiondo Announces 2 Fire Grants to South Jersey

Aug 16, 2017

MAYS LANDING, N.J. – U.S. Congressman Frank LoBiondo (NJ-02) today announced two federal Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) totaling $121,662 to be shared by Logan Volunteer Fire Company and the Buena Vista Township Fire District. Since the program began in 2001, New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District fire and emergency response organizations have received more than $26 million under AFG.

“Each day our first responders risk their lives for our communities by answering the call for help. Without hesitation the men and women of our fire and emergency response companies come through for us,” said LoBiondo, a member of the Congressional Fire Caucus. “The peer-reviewed AFG program has helped many first responders acquire critical life-saving equipment. I will continue to strongly support this federal program which literally saves lives.”

Today’s funding announcement includes $98,014 to the Logan Volunteer Fire Company of Pedricktown. This is the fourth AFG grant for the fire company with previous awards of $112,500 (2003), $55,397 (2004), and $31,745 (2013).

For their first AFG grant, $23,648 is awarded to the Buena Vista Township Fire District #1.

“We always happy to receive federal support for our volunteer fire department here in Buena Vista. They do an outstanding job and this will help with safety equipment purchases,” said Buena Vista Township Mayor Chuck Chiarello.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards grants directly to fire departments and emergency services to support their efforts to protect the communities they serve. The Fiscal Year 2016 program will award approximately $310.5 million in competitive grants to first responder organizations across the country to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources required to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administers the program. Each summer Congressman LoBiondo’s office hosts local seminars for area fire departments to highlight the benefits of this grant program and assist with the application process. They are held in cooperation with Senator Cory Booker’s office. LoBiondo has sponsored similar seminars for more than a decade. More information can be found at www.fema.gov/firegrants/
