LoBiondo Applauds Team from Veterans Memorial Middle School in Vineland for Winning 2017 Congressional App Challenge

Dec 4, 2017

MAYS LANDING, N.J. – U.S. Representative Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) today applauded the 3-person team from Veterans Memorial Middle School in Vineland for winning the 2017 Congressional App Challenge. Their submission - “Eating Green” - is a mobile application designed to help consumers navigate the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recall notices on food products as well as health ratings of local restaurants.

“Congratulations to Ljakadja, Hannah and Nishi for their innovative and informative app. It is clear they were looking to assist Americans’ desire to eat healthy and know the latest recall notices for unsafe foods. I was impressed by the substantial thought and execution displayed in this app,” said LoBiondo.  “I applaud all of the students who participated in this year’s Congressional App Challenge and encourage you and your classmates to continue creating forward-looking technology.”

The Congressional App Challenge is a nationwide competition aimed at encouraging middle and high school students to learn how to code by creating their own applications for mobile devices. The Challenge seeks to highlight the value of computer science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education while spurring friendly competition between competing teams. This is the first year middle school students were invited to compete.

Seventeen (17) teams comprised of fifty (50) students across South Jersey competed in the fourth annual challenge. This is the fourth year of the Congressional App Challenge and the fourth year LoBiondo’s office has hosted the competition for South Jersey students. Information about the Congressional App Challenge can be found at www.congressionalappchallenge.us

For the 2nd Congressional district, the submitted apps were reviewed by the following judges:

  • Holly Cyrus - Project Manager at the FAA Technical Center
  • Adam Greco - Air Traffic Domain Director at the FAA Technical Center
  • Dr. Nancy Hudanich – Superintendent of Cape May County Technical School District
  • Thomas Fien – Robotics Club Advisory of the Cumberland County Technical Education Center
  • Peter D’Amico – Computer Engineer at the FAA Technical Center
